The Dangers of Teen Alcohol Abuse
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

Defined Tag:

Studies continue to show how serious teen alcohol abuse truly is. Not only is it bad for teens to drink because overdoing anything is unhealthy but teenagers who abuse alcohol have many difficulties in lives. To begin with it has been proven that those teenagers who drink excessive amount of alcohol have problems in school. Their short term memory skills are affected as are their general academic achievements. Teenagers who drink all too often are under the legal drinking age and studies have shown that too many of them who begin to drink at fifteen and below can look at the prospect of a lifetime of abusing alcohol if they do not do something to stop themselves early.

Those who abuse alcohol as teenagers, in the sixteen to nineteen age ranges, have double the chance of dying in a vehicle accident as those who do not drink and drive and are over twenty. Sadly fatal car accidents are the leading killer of those who are fifteen to twenty. As well, those who are heavy drinkers as teenagers are more likely to be stressed or depressed and so have a higher incidence of suicide. The feeling is that the alcohol only makes these problems worse and may be the catalyst that pushes these young people into attempting suicide. One study of female students in grade eight showed that thirty seven percent of those who drank attempted to end their lives while only eleven percent of those who did not drink contemplated it.

There is more bad news for teenagers who drink too much. They appear to be less than careful with their intimate relationships. They are known to be less likely to take precautions during intercourse. This means a higher risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease and a higher risk of pregnancy. As well, it means that teens may have sex with someone they do not know well simply because they are inebriated. Rape is more likely to occur when alcohol is abused by the offender. All of these issues point to the fact that teen alcohol abuse is a more serious problem than many realize. Parents, teachers and family members need to work harder to teach teenagers about the dangers of alcohol instead of assuming that time and life’s lessons will be all they need to learn the hard truth.
