Symptoms of Alcohol Abuse
Defined Tag: Alcohol Abuse. Many people think that alcoholism and alcohol abuse is the same thing, but those in the medical, research and rehabilitation fields will tell you this is not correct. Alcohol abuse is very different. If someone is an alcoholic they constantly crave an alcoholic drink, they loss control over their drinking and are unable to just have a single drink or none at all. They also become physically dependent on their liquor intake. To judge whether someone is abusing alcohol a professional looks at the last twelve months to see if a particular pattern has developed. The symptoms include the inability to properly function at home, work or school. This would include not being able to get school assignments completed, not finishing work projects and not being able to keep things working properly around the home. Abusers also will be late for school or work, miss an increasing number of days and generally show a poor attitude. Abusers tend to drink in situations that they know are dangerous; this often includes while driving. They will have continuing legal problems that relate directly back to their drinking problem. This may include losing their license because of driving while drinking or getting into fights where someone is harmed. They will ignore the fact that their relationship is being destroyed by their drinking. Sometimes there are blackouts where the drinking has caused a small memory loss. Another sign of someone being an abuser of alcohol is when they have a health problem caused, or sometimes just aggravated, by alcohol and they still do not quit drinking. These heath problems could include a peptic ulcer. Many of those who abuse alcohol do not even realize what they are doing. They do not necessarily drink daily and so they assume that their drinking is not a problem. Not drinking daily does not mean that there is no problem. There are some people who do not drink for long periods of time and then binge drink causing themselves all sorts of medical, emotional and personal problems. Others quit thinking they can do anything they want and it will not come back, but stopping requires more than just wishful thinking. The key here is to recognize if a person is suffering from alcohol abuse and help them to do something about it.
